WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP COVER?

The Spirit Education Foundation Trust, partnered with the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology, is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme for the 2028 academic year.

The high school scholarship programme is open to female students, who will be entering Grade 8 in 2028.

The scholarship will cover studies at the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology (located in Constantia, Cape Town). (Find out more about the Cape Academy here).

WHAT EXPENSES & BENEFITS DOES THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP COVER?

The scholarship will provide financial support, by covering the following expenses: high school fees, contribution towards school uniform, contribution towards stationery and payment towards subject specific stationery.

Apart from financial assistance, students will also receive the following benefits: structured mentorship, skills development, and holistic upliftment programmes.

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be female
  • You must be from an economically disadvantaged background
  • You must be currently in Grade 6 in 2026
  • You must have achieved a minimum of code 6 for Mathematics, English Home Language and Natural Science
  • You must be entering in Grade 8 in 2028
  • You must intend on applying to and attending of the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology (located in Constantia, Cape Town)
  • You must reside near or be able to travel to Constantia, Cape Town, daily
  • You must show strong academic ability
  • You must be interested in pursuing studies and a career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field, after high school
  • You must have a gross family household income of NOT more than R20 000 per month (before deductions)
  • You must read and agree to the Spirit Education Foundation Code of Conduct (.pdf)

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP?

WHAT DOCUMENTS MUST I SUBMIT FOR THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP?

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • Birth certificate/ passport/ study permit
  • Parents or guardians ID documents/ passport/ permit
  • Grade 6 Term 2 or Term 3 report card
  • Proof of residence
  • Parents or guardian’s proof of household income (latest payslips or affidavit if employed, affidavit if unemployed, pension advice slip if on pension, proof of sassa grant if applicable) (certified copies)

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP?

  • Applications are open between September and October 2026.
  • Initial screening will take place and applicants will receive feedback between December 2026 and January 2027.
  • Academic testing will be conducted between February and March 2027.
  • Interviews will take place between March and April 2027.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be able to apply to Cape Academy on WCED website between April and May 2027.
  • Applicants will complete Spirit Foundation testing at Cape Academy between May and June 2027.
  • Successful applicants will receive their offers between June and July 2027.

WHAT DOES THE SPIRIT EDUCATION FOUNDATION (SEF) DO?

The Spirit Foundation is a long-standing philanthropic organisation established by the Kilbride family, with more than three decades of work supporting education, community development and wildlife conservation. Its education initiatives focus on creating meaningful opportunities for young people from communities where access to quality education can be limited.

A key part of this work is the Spirit Foundation High School Scholarship Programme, which supports talented young women from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. From 2028, the programme will work exclusively with the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology, providing scholarships for female learners who demonstrate strong academic potential and an interest in STEM-related subjects and careers.

Beyond covering educational support, the programme takes a broader approach to scholar development. Recipients have access to mentorship, skills development and holistic support designed to help them succeed throughout their high school years. The programme also aims to develop qualities such as confidence, leadership, creativity and social responsibility, helping scholars prepare for both further studies and future careers.

Through its continued investment in education, the Spirit Foundation aims to give high-potential young women the opportunity to reach their full potential while contributing positively to their communities.
