ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – SPIRIT EDUCATION FOUNDATION (SEF)

The Spirit Education Foundation Trust (SEF) is a non-profit organization, located in Cape Town. The organization’s main goal is to offer educational scholarships to underprivileged high school students within the Western Cape. With this, the SEF hopes to uplift the nation through education, by providing these scholars with the necessary aid needed to complete their studies. The Trust also offers students a mentorship programme, whereby they recieve motivation to achieve in their studies, explore their creativity, and gain community awareness.
 

ABOUT THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

The Spirit Education Foundation Trust is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2025 academic year.

The high school scholarship programme will be awarded to students entering Grade 8 in 2025, for studies at SEF’s partner high schools, in Cape Town:

  • Bergvliet High School (Bergvliet)
  • Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology (Constantia)
  • Claremont High School (Claremont)
  • Groote Schuur High School (Newlands)
  • Pinelands High School (Pinelands)
  • South Peninsula High School (Diep River)
  • Westerford High School (Rondebosch)
  • Wynberg Boys High School (Wynberg)
  • Wynberg Girls High School (Wynberg)
  • Zwaanswyk High School (Retreat)

MORE ABOUT THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVEREDD & BENEFITS

The scholarship will provide cover for the following expenses: high school fees, financial academic support, school uniform contribution, stationary contribution and subject-specific stationary contribution

The SEF scholarship offers a unique mentorship programme that uses an individual approach to create an enrichment support plan catered for the student’s needs. This approach, that uses both individual and intentional communication, allows the SEF to be proactive by meeting each scholar, their families, and schools on a regular basis. This ensures that the programme takes a holistic approach and provides the student with support in academics, emotional well-being, skills development, and relationship building. This also ensures that the student has the freedom to explore their creativity, leadership skills, and become an active member of the community.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be in Grade 6 in 2023
  • You must have achieved a minimum of Code 6 for your Grade 6 Term 1 report, for the following subjects: English (Home Language), Mathematics and Natural Sciences
  • You must have a gross family household income of no more than R20 000 per month (before deductions)
  • You must be commencing Grade 8 in 2025
  • You must plan to study at any of the above aforementioned high schools
  • You must reside within the Western Cape

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

Applications can be submitted in either of the following ways:

– Download and complete the SEF High School Scholarship Application Form 2024 (.pdf)

Should you choose to download the application form, applications must be submitted via email to: scholarships@spiritef.org
(Insert the words “SEF High School Scholarship” in the email subject line).

Enter “www.zabursaries.co.za” in the field asking how you heard about the SEF High School Scholarship.
 

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • Birth certificate/ passport/ study permit
  • Parents/ guardians ID documents/ passport/ permit
  • Grade 6 Term 2/ 3 report card
  • Proof of residence
  • Parents or guardian’s proof of household income (latest payslips or affidavit if employed, affidavit if unemployed, pension advice slip if on pension, proof of sassa grant if applicable) (certified copies)
  • Application essay (no more than 500 words) answering the following question: If you were given R1 million what would you do with the money and why?

 

NOTES ABOUT THE SEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

  • Parents should download and read the SEF High School Scholar Handbook (.pdf) for more information.
  • Scholarship awards will only be awarded to students who attend/ plan to attend one of the partner schools.
  • Parents are encouraged to apply to as many schools as possible (i.e. not only the aforementioned schools).
  • Places for the scholarship award are not held for students, as such, it is the responsibility of the parent and student to ensure that the Western Cape Government application process is followed.

Parents should take note of the recruitment timeline guidelines:

  • Applications are open between September and November 2023.
  • Applicants will receive feedback between December 2023 and January 2024.
  • Academic testing will be conducted between February and March 2024.
  • High school applications are then reviewed between March and April 2024.
  • Meetings/ interviews will be conducted between May and June 2024.
  • Offers will be made to successful applicants between June and July 2024.
  • Please note: If you have not received correspondence from the foundation by 30 January 2024, consider your application unsuccessful.
