WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY COVER?

Gert-Johan Coetzee is inviting students to apply for the Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Bursary, for the 2027 academic year.

The bursary will be awarded for studies at the North West School of Design, to pursue Fashion Design studies for 3 years. Studies will commence on 3 February 2027.

The North West School of Design is based in Klerksdorp (North West province), and is an internationally accredited fashion school, which has just celebrated 25 years of training top designers and fashion professionals in South Africa.

WHAT EXPENSES DOES THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY COVER?

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: 3 years of full tuition fees (valued at R200 000), a Laptop sponsored by Gert-Johan Coetzee Studios and a Bernina sewing machine (valued at R14 000).

There will also be 2 annual internships at Gert-Johan Coetzee Studios.

The bursary will NOT provide cover for transport, accommodation, meals, or fabric required for your projects.

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY?

The North West School of Design will announce the finalists on 11 September 2026. Gert-Johan Coetzee will then announce 1 winner.

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric with a Diploma exemption or equivalent
  • You must intend on studying full-time towards a 3 year Fashion Design course at the North West School of Design in Klerksdorp
  • You must be able to start your studies in February 2027
  • You must be willing to commit to 3 years of study
  • You must be fluent in English (read, write and speak)
  • You must read the NWSD course prospectus (.pdf)

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY?

WHO IS GERT-JOHAN COETZEE?

Gert-Johan Coetzee is one of South Africa’s best-known fashion designers, recognised for his work in couture, red-carpet fashion and bridal wear. Over the course of his career, he has designed outfits for a range of prominent South African and international personalities, including Kourtney Kardashian, Kristen Cavallari, Bonang Matheba, Basetsana Khumalo, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Sashi Naidoo, Tatum Keshwar, Louise Carver, Noeleen and Cindy Nell.

Beyond his work in fashion, Coetzee has also contributed to developing the next generation of South African designers. Since 2009, he has partnered with the North West School of Design (NWSD) to provide bursary opportunities to talented and deserving students.

The bursary initiative is intended to help students who have a passion for fashion pursue their studies despite financial challenges. Through this support, Gert-Johan Coetzee and NWSD aim to encourage emerging talent, strengthen the local fashion industry and give aspiring designers an opportunity to build careers in the field.
