WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE DR XOLANI MKHWANAZI SOUTH32 BURSARY COVER?

South32 is inviting students to apply for the Dr Xolani Mkhwanazi Bursary Scheme, for the 2027 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded to students residing within the King Cetshwayo District (KwaZulu-Natal), for degree or diploma studies (including but not limited to) the following fields:

  • Engineering, Built Environment & Architecture (All disciplines)
  • Commerce, Law & Management (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business Science & Law)
  • Health Sciences (Medicine, Nursing, etc.)
  • Humanities (Arts, Social Science, Education, etc.)
  • Science (Mathematical Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, Actuarial Science and Biological Science)
  • Computer Science & Information Technology
  • consideration may be given for other disciplines

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE DR XOLANI MKHWANAZI SOUTH32 BURSARY?

Bursaries are awarded for 1 academic year at a time, and are renewable based on academic performance and conduct.

Students will be selected based on academic excellence, as well as other criteria.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited to attend an interview and assessment.

WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE DR XOLANI MKHWANAZI SOUTH32 BURSARY?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must reside within the King Cetshwayo District (in KwaZulu-Natal province)

  • You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • Preference will be given to students from designated groups

WHAT DOES SOUTH32 DO?

South32 is a global mining and metals company that was established in 2015 following the demerger of assets from BHP Billiton. The company produces and develops commodities that are important to modern infrastructure and the transition towards a lower-carbon economy. Its portfolio includes aluminium, alumina, manganese, nickel, silver, lead, zinc, copper and metallurgical coal, with operations and development projects spanning Australia, Southern Africa and the Americas.

In South Africa, South32 has a long-standing presence, including manganese operations in the Northern Cape and a regional office in Johannesburg. The company’s activities contribute to the supply of materials used in industries such as construction, manufacturing, technology, transportation and energy.

South32 also places emphasis on developing future skills and supporting communities where it operates. Its education initiatives include financial assistance for students through its South African bursary programme, helping talented young people pursue tertiary studies and build careers in fields relevant to the mining and metals industry.

The Dr Xolani Mkhwanazi South32 Bursary Scheme was named in honour of the late Dr Xolani Mkhwanazi, who served as a South32 Non-Executive Director from 2015 until his death in 2020. A respected scientist and business leader, Dr Mkhwanazi had extensive experience in South Africa’s mining, metals and technology sectors. South32 renamed its South African bursary scheme in his honour in FY2021, reflecting his commitment to developing young talent and building the industry’s future skills base.
