White River Saw Mills is a Timber production company, responsible for producing a wide range of products, namely laminating beams, packaging and furniture grade timber, flooring and ceiling (just to name a few.) The Company prides itself on its ability to meet industry requirements and serve all its valued customers both on a local and international scale. White River Saw Mills is also fully committed to protecting and enhancing the environment in which it operates, thus taking the necessary precautions to minimize pollution throughout its production process.
 

ABOUT THE WRSM BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

White River Saw Mills (WRSM) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2024 academic year.

The bursary opportunity is available for studies towards a National Diploma in Wood Technology, at Nelson Mandela University (George Campus).

The aim of the bursary opportunity is to combat unemployment, uplift talented individuals, address inequalities, and source scholars within the community. Through this, White River Saw Mills hopes to foster a new generation of Wood Technologists/ Sawmillers who can become high-performing line managers in the future.

MORE ABOUT THE WRSM BURSARY PROGRAMME

Students will complete practical experience and mentoring at White River Saw Mills during holidays and during their experiential year.

The programme consists of both academic and experience training which will take place at campus and an approved wood processing facility. During this 3 year, full-time programme, the candidate will learn about the importance of applying practical and academic knowledge to timber and timber processing technology in practice.

Through this, the candidate will gain the necessary skills needed to provide assistance in converting raw wood materials into commercial products, and ultimately become a professional within the industry.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WRSM BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be currently in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum of level 3 (40-49%) for English, Afrikaans, or Xhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language), in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum of level 3 (40-49%) for Mathematics or level 5 (60-69%) for Mathematical Literacy, in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum of level 2 (30-39%) for Physical Sciences, in Matric
  • You must have achieved the minimum NSC statutory requirements for admission into a Diploma
  • You must have obtained an Admissions Points Score (APS) of 32
  • You must be studying or intend on studying at Nelson Mandela University in George
  • You must be able to attend all the classes and assessments
  • You must reside in a community in which White River Saw Mills operates
  • You must show an interest in technology and business (applicable to timber as a sustainable natural resource)
  • You must be adaptable
  • You must be able to work well under pressure
  • You must be able to meet all deadlines
  • You must be a logical thinker

Please note:

  • If you completed Mathematics Literacy in Matric, you may apply to be placed in an associated extended qualification and will need to have a minimum Applicant Score of 345
  • Candidates who have an APS score between 22 and 31 may be referred to write the Access Assessment Battery to determine if they can qualify for the programme
  • Some preferred NSC subjects are Engineering Graphics and Design
  • Should you have an NSC Grade 12 with Mathematics/ Technical Mathematics, you will then need to have a minimum Applicant Score of 330
