ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – SARAO

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is a facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF), which is responsible for managing all radio astronomy initiatives and facilities in South Africa. SARAO manages the MeerKAT Radio Telescope in the Karoo, and the Geodesy and VLBI activities at the HartRAO facility.
 

ABOUT THE SARAO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programmes, for the 2024 academic year.

2 types of scholarships will be awarded, for studies within the following fields:
Bachelor in Engineering Technology (BET) Scholarship:

  • Bachelor in Engineering Technology: Electronics Engineering
  • Bachelor in Engineering Technology: Mechanical Engineering

Diploma in Engineering Technology (DET) Scholarship:

  • Diploma in Engineering Technology: Electronics Engineering
  • Diploma in Engineering Technology: Mechanical Engineering

MORE ABOUT THE SARAO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – VALUE, RENEWAL & SELECTION

Scholarships will be awarded to the following values (this amount may be adjusted to consider changes in university fees and inflation):

  • BET Scholarship: R118 500
  • DET Scholarship: R117 500

The duration of the scholarship depends on the students year of study – first year students will be funded for 3 years, while second year students will be funded for 2 years, and third year students will be funded for 1 year.

Successful applicants will be notified by no later than 10 December 2023. If you do not receive any feedback by this date, please consider your application unsuccessful.
 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SARAO SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Bachelor in Engineering Technology (BET) Scholarship:

  • You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident
  • You must be 24 years old or younger
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards one of the qualifications listed above, in 2024
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of 65% for Mathematics and Physical Science in Matric OR a minimum overall average of 60% for your core subjects at undergraduate level
  • You must have passed all courses, including the core engineering courses, required to progress to the next academic level/year, if currently studying
  • You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited university of technology in South Africa

Diploma in Engineering Technology (DET) Scholarship:

  • You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident
  • You must be 24 years old or younger
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards one of the qualifications listed above, in 2024
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Mathematics and Physical Science in Matric OR a minimum overall average of 60% for your core subjects at undergraduate level
  • You must have passed all courses, including the core engineering courses, required to progress to the next academic level/year, if currently studying
  • You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited university of technology in South Africa

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SARAO SCHOLARSHIP

Applications must be submitted online at:

Applicants will be required to Register an account before they can Login and apply.

Enter “www.zabursaries.co.za” in the field asking how you heard about the SARAO Scholarship.
 

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID document, if an SA citizen
  • Passport and permanent residence visa, if a permanent resident
  • Grade 11 final results and Matric most recent report, if currently in Matric
  • Academic record, if currently studying
  • 2 letters of reference (one must be from a teacher or lecturer)
  • Motivational letter, explaining the following:
    • your achievements to date, why you have chosen to study a BET/ DET, when and why you became interested in engineering, the engineering skills you have acquired thus far, and your career aspirations
    • if you have a toolbox at home, what is in your toolbox, and which tools would you like to have in your toolbox
    • explain, in your own words: 1. What is engineering, 2. What attributes you think are most important for an engineer, 3. The work of the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), and why an organisation such as SARAO needs engineers?

 

CONDITIONS OF THE SARAO SCHOLARSHIP

  • SARAO will make payment of the scholarship after receiving the recipients proof of registration at their university of technology – no funding will be awarded without this.
  • SARAO scholarships are renewable every 6 months, for the duration of the scholarship as stated above. Renewal of the scholarship is at the discretion of SARAO, and is subject to satisfactory academic performance by the student.
  • Students are required to maintain a minimum average of 60% each semester, to keep receiving funding.
  • Students who do not complete their qualification, leave their institution during the scholarship period or relinquish their studies, will be required to pay back the scholarship award.
  • Students may receive other grants or funding, up to a maximum value of 50% of the SARAO scholarship. Students must make SARAO aware of any additional awards, via their university of technology.
  • Students who wish to change their field of study or University of Technology, after awarding of the scholarship, must submit a motivation to SARAO to request approval.
  • After graduation, students must submit a copy of their qualification to SARAO.
  • After graduation, students must take up employment at SARAO (if a position is offered), for a minimum period of three years.

 

CLOSING DATE FOR THE SARAO SCHOLARSHIP

Closing dates may differ by the universities of technology – check with your institution.
BET Scholarship: 31 August 2023.
DET Scholarship: 30 September 2023.
(Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted – please apply before the closing date to ensure your application is considered.)
