WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE NKANGALA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY BURSARY COVER?

The Nkangala District Municipality is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2027 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded to students who reside within the Nkangala District Municipality (Mpumalanga), preferably for undergraduate studies within these fields:

• Architecture
• Civil Engineering
• Disaster Management
• Environmental Management
• Finance
• Information Technology Engineering (Robotics/ Software Development)
• Law
• Mining Engineering
• Regional/ Town Planning
• Social Sciences

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE NKANGALA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY BURSARY?

The bursary will NOT cover any outstanding student debt.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted – if you do not receive any feedback, please regard your application as unsuccessful.

WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE NKANGALA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY BURSARY?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

• You must be a South African citizen
• You must be between 17 and 35 years old
• You must reside within the Nkangala District Municipality area of jurisdiction, in Mpumalanga province, including the following local municipalities:
  • Dr JS Moroka
  • Emakhazeni
  • Emalahleni
  • Steve Tshwete
  • Thembisile Hani
  • Victor Khanye
• You must be from a historically disadvantaged background
• You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
• You must be studying or intend on studying full-time, towards an undergraduate qualification in one of the fields of study listed above
• You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited public institution in South Africa (University, University of Technology or TVET College)
• You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 60% for the 2026 academic year, if enrolled at university
• You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 50% for the 2026 academic year, if enrolled at TVET college
• You must have proven financial need, with a total household income of NOT more than R180 000 per annum
• You must agree to enter into a contractual agreement with Nkangala Local Municipality

WHAT DOES THE NKANGALA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY DO?

The Nkangala District Municipality is one of Mpumalanga’s three district municipalities and serves as an important administrative and economic region within the province. The district consists of six local municipalities: Emalahleni, Victor Khanye, Steve Tshwete, Thembisile Hani, Emakhazeni and Dr JS Moroka. The district municipality’s headquarters are situated in Middelburg.

Nkangala plays a significant role in Mpumalanga’s economy, supported by its rich reserves of coal and other mineral resources, as well as its established industrial, energy and agricultural activities. The district’s natural resources and strategic economic sectors contribute substantially to employment, development and investment in the province.

Through its development initiatives and community-focused programmes, the Nkangala District Municipality also contributes to improving opportunities for residents and supporting long-term socio-economic growth. Its role in education and skills development forms part of these efforts, including initiatives such as bursary opportunities aimed at helping deserving students pursue higher education.
