ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – MASTERCARD FOUNDATION

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, a global initiative formed in 2012, aims to assist the youth, mainly for African countries, to pursue their higher education studies and cultivate their leadership potential. The Program provides financial, social, and academic support to talented students who lack the financial resources to complete their education.

The Scholars Program is implemented through partner universities and non-governmental organizations, with the application process and decision-making managed by each partner.
 

ABOUT THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with the University of the Western Cape (UWC), is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme, for the 2024 academic year.

Scholarships will be awarded to academically talented young African students, for studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), within the following fields:

Undergraduate Qualifications:

  • Economic & Management Sciences (Economics, Information Sciences and Public
    Administration)
  • Education (Mathematics and Science, Foundation Phase)
  • Humanities & Arts (History, Linguistics, Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies)
  • Natural Sciences (Biological, Computational, Mathematical and Physical Sciences)

Postgraduate Qualifications (Masters degrees):

  • Community & Health Sciences (Public Health)
  • Economic & Management Sciences (Development Studies, Information Sciences and
    Migration Studies)
  • Humanities & Arts (Applied Linguistics, History, Gender Justice, Migration Studies,
    Sociology for Development)
  • Law (Governance and Human Rights)
  • Natural Sciences (Biological, Computational, Mathematical and Physical Sciences)

MORE ABOUT THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

The scholarship will provide full funding for a maximum period of 4 years for undergraduate studies (3-year first degree plus 1-year honours degree or a 4-year first degree) and 2 years for Masters studies.

A selection committee will review all applications and thereafter contact shortlisted candidates for an interview, either in person or virtually. Selected candidates will be contacted by no later than 17 November 2023.
 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Undergraduate Studies:

  • You must be from South Africa or another African country
  • You must NOT be older than 26 years old
  • You must have applied for admission to UWC for 2024
  • You must meet the minimum admissions requirements for the degree you intend to pursue at UWC
  • You must be prepared to register for full-time undergraduate studies in January 2024
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must have proven financial need
  • People living with disabilities are encouraged to apply
  • You must read and agree to the information in the Call for Applications before applying

Postgraduate (Masters) Studies:

  • You must be from South Africa or another African country
  • You must NOT be older than 30 years old
  • You must have applied for admission to UWC for 2024
  • You must meet the minimum admissions requirements for the degree you intend to pursue at UWC
  • You must be prepared to begin your first year of registration for full-time master’s degree studies in January 2024
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must have proven financial need
  • People living with disabilities are encouraged to apply
  • You must read and agree to the information in the Call for Applications before applying

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Candidates must follow these steps to apply:
Step 1: Apply for admission to UWC
After applying to UWC, you will receive an Application Number. If you are a returning UWC student, you will already have a Student Number. After receiving your student number, proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program:

Mastercard Foundation Scholarship 2024 (Undergraduate studies)

Enter “www.zabursaries.co.za” in the field asking how you heard about the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship.
 

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online scholarship application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

Undergraduate applicants:

  • ID Document or Passport, and where applicable, the visa page and/or refugee/asylum seeker permit (must be saved with the name: Identity Document or Passport) (certified copy)
  • Cover letter, with the following information: personal background including family financial position, why you chose UWC and where you see yourself after graduation (must be saved with the name: Initial.Surname_Cover_Letter)
  • Matric certificate or mid-year Matric results (must be saved with the name: High School certificate)
  • Letter of recommendation from your high school principal/ deputy principal – must be current, official, and signed (must be saved with the name: Recommendation Letter)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph (must be saved with the name: Photograph)

Postgraduate (Masters) applicants:

  • ID Document or Passport, and where applicable, the visa page and/or refugee/asylum seeker permit (must be saved with the name: Identity Document or Passport) (certified copy)
  • Cover letter, with the following information: personal background including family financial position, why you chose UWC and where you see yourself after graduation (must be saved with the name: Initial.Surname_Cover_Letter)
  • All academic records, including high school certificate/s and university-awarded degree/s (must be saved with the name: Academic Records) (certified copy)
  • Letter of recommendation from your supervisor or head of department/school – must be current, official, and signed (must be saved with the name: Recommendation Letter)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph (must be saved with the name: Photograph)
