ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – UCT ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL

The UCT Online High School was launched in June 2021, by the University of Cape Town (UCT), becoming the first university in Africa to extend its expertise and impact the secondary schooling market.

The UCT Online High School now has thousands of learners in Grade 8 to 11 working towards completing their National Senior Certificate (Matric), online.
 

ABOUT THE UCT ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

UCT Online High School is inviting students to apply for their Learning Liberated Scholarship Programme, for the 2024 academic year.

The scholarship is open to students entering Grades 8 to 11, who will complete the high school CAPS curriculum online. Students will start in January 2024.

The Learning Liberated Scholarship Programme is being launched by UCT Online High School, with the aim of providing education to learners who may not afford the full tuition. The scholarship is made possible by a collaboration with corporate sponsors, including: Valenture Institute, Sanlam, iBhodi Trust, Human Rights Commission and Imbeleko.

MORE ABOUT THE UCTOHS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE

The Learning Liberated Scholarship offers partial support, covering 50% of the tuition fee, for the duration of the scholarship awarded. Students will also receive full cover for the SACAI Grade 12 Examination fee. Because it is a partial scholarship, more students will be funded.

The scholarship will NOT provide cover for the following expenses (these will be for the parent or guardians own account): stationery, language setworks, textbooks (if required), learner’s laptop, internet access, printer and headphones. Parent or guardians will also be responsible for the other 50% of the tuition fee.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UCTOHS SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be reside in South Africa (at the time of the application and for the duration of your high school studies)
  • You must have at least one parent or guardian who is a South African citizen
  • You must be entering Grade 8, Grade 9, Grade 10 or Grade 11
  • You must be of the correct age to be entering the above grades
  • You must be able to start in January 2024
  • You must intend to complete the CAPS curriculum resulting in the National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • You must have proven financial need, with a family household income of NOT more than R350 000 per annum or R29 000 per month
  • You must achieve a minimum average of 60% for English (Home Language)
  • You must achieve a minimum average of 60% for Mathematics
  • You must intend to pursue tertiary studies and career after completing high school
  • You must have access to stable and reliable internet, a laptop or desktop, a printer and UPS devices
  • You must have access to a safe learning environment with necessary support from at least 1 adult champion/ supervisor
  • You must read and agree to the rules of the scholarship policy

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE UCTOHS SCHOLARSHIP

Candidates may apply by following these steps:
Step 1: complete the preapplication form for the scholarship to assess whether the learner meets the criteria to apply. Students who are eligible to apply, will be contacted by UCT Online High School with further instructions to apply.

Step 2: the next step in the application process, is to complete a full NSC admissions application to apply to UCT Online High School. Applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of R50 and a placement fee of R525.

Step 3: applicants will be required to submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with their application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID Document or Birth Certificate
  • ID Photo
  • 2023 Term 3 Academic Report
  • 2023 Term 4 Final Academic Report (to be submitted in December)
  • Applicant Reference Letter from a senior member of the learner’s current school, confirming that the learner has the necessary aptitude to thrive in an online learning environment
  • Aspirations & Academic Journey Letter from the applicant, motivating their desire to pursue a tertiary education and career after high school
  • Proof of Address
  • Parents or guardians ID Document or Birth Certificate
  • Parents or guardians proof of income (not older than 1 month at the time of application)
  • Parents or guardians Proof of Address (not older than 1 month at the time of application)

 

TIMELINE AND SELECTION FOR THE UCTOHS SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must take note of the timeline for the scholarship:

  • The application opens on 4 September 2023 and closes on 31 October 2023. During this timeframe, applicants must complete the preapplication above, they must pay the non-refundable application fee and work through the application process to become a scholarship candidate.
  • Between 1 November 2023 and 30 November 2023, candidates will be shortlisted and be matched, depending on available funding and the sponsors additional criteria.
  • Between 1 December 2023 and 30 December 2023, the scholar will be awarded and accept the scholarship, supported by a corporate sponsor. Successful learners will also receive a Scholarship Memorandum of Agreement (SMOA), and accept and sign the SMOA within the allocated timeframe. Students must submit their 2023 Term 4 Final Academic Report, validated by the SRO team.
  • Learners who are unsuccessful in the scholarship application will be notified via email.
