WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE LPFF BURSARY COVER?

The Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2027 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded for studies within the Law field, including:

  • LLB
  • BCom Law (with the intention of transferring to LLB programme)
  • BA Law (with the intention of transferring to LLB programme)

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE LPFF BURSARY?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Undergraduate students:

  • You must be a South African citizen or a South African permanent resident
  • You must fall into one of these categories:
    • studying towards an LLB qualification, currently in your 2nd or 3rd year and be entering your 3rd or 4th year of study (the bursary will NOT fund 1st year students)
    • completed a BA/ BCom degree and be transitioning to complete the last 2 years of an LLB degree
    • currently in the 3rd year of the extended LLB programme to apply for 4th and 5th year of study
  • You must have achieved a minimum average of 50% in your latest academic results
  • You must be studying at a recognised and accredited public University in South Africa
  • You must be read and agree to the rules of the bursary

Postgraduate students:

  • You must be a South African citizen or a South African permanent resident
  • You must have completed an LLB degree
  • You must have achieved a minimum average of 50% in your latest academic results
  • You must be studying at a recognised and accredited public University in South Africa
  • You must be a practising attorney or a candidate attorney
  • You must be employed at a legal practicing firm (the bursary will NOT fund students employed in state entities)
  • You must be read and agree to the rules of the bursary

WHAT DOCUMENTS MUST I SUBMIT FOR THE LPFF BURSARY?

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • Digital photo
  • ID document or passport (certified copy)
  • Proof of permanent residence (certified copy)
  • Recent academic transcript
  • Testimonial letter from the university
  • Proof of employment/ payslip, if employed

The Legal Practitioners’ Fidelity Fund (LPFF), formerly known as the Attorneys Fidelity Fund (AFF), is a statutory fidelity guarantee fund established under the Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014. Its primary purpose is to protect members of the public who suffer financial loss after money or property entrusted to a legal practitioner is stolen or misappropriated while being held in trust during the course of legal practice.

By providing compensation in qualifying cases, the LPFF helps strengthen public confidence in South Africa’s legal profession. The Fund plays an important role in maintaining trust in attorneys and trust account advocates by ensuring that clients have financial protection when trust funds are unlawfully misused. In addition to administering claims, the LPFF supports the legal profession through initiatives such as legal education, bursaries and regulatory funding in accordance with the Legal Practice Act.
