WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE SAMANCOR CHROME BURSARY?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards an undergraduate qualification, within one of the fields of study listed above

WHAT DOES SAMANCOR CHROME DO?

Samancor Chrome is a South African mining and ferrochrome producer with a history dating back to 1975. The company was formed through the merger of SA Manganese Ltd and Amcor Ltd. SA Manganese had been established to mine manganese ore in the Northern Cape, while Amcor focused on mineral extraction and the production of ferroalloys for the steel industry.

The company was previously associated with BHP Billiton and Anglo American, which held 60% and 40% respectively. Following the sale of the chrome business to the Kermas Group in 2005, Samancor Chrome Holdings (Pty) Limited was established as the company’s sole shareholder. Samancor Chrome is now a privately owned company.

Samancor Chrome’s business is centred on the mining and beneficiation of chrome ore and its conversion into ferrochrome, an important raw material used in stainless steel production. The company’s chrome mining activities are located along the eastern and western limbs of South Africa’s Bushveld Igneous Complex, one of the world’s major sources of chromite. Its mining operations include Eastern Chrome Mines in the Steelpoort Valley and Western Chrome Mines in the North West Province.

The company currently operates six ferrochrome smelting operations: Ferrometals, Middelburg Ferrochrome, Tubatse Ferrochrome, Tubatse Alloy, TC Smelter and Dikwena Chrome. Together, these facilities provide Samancor Chrome with substantial ferrochrome production capacity. The company states that its combined capacity exceeds 2 million metric tons of charge chrome per year, although actual production varies according to market conditions.

Samancor Chrome supplies ferrochrome and chrome ore to markets in South Africa and internationally. More than 90% of the company’s chrome alloy production is exported to stainless-steel producers around the world, highlighting its role in the global chrome and ferroalloy supply chain.
