ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – SAMRC

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) has the main goal of enhancing the life and health of people across the country. Established in 1969, SAMRC continues to be dedicated to research, development, innovation, and technology transfer to reach this main goal. The scope of research conducted by SARMC consists of clinical research, laboratory investigations, and public health studies.
 

ABOUT THE SAMRC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme, for the 2024 academic year.

Scholarships will be awarded to five female students, for studies towards a Masters (MSc) in Biostatistics/ Statistics. The scholarship was made possible by funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The award is targeted at female candidates and hopes to increase statistical capacity and the number of females with advanced statistical modelling skills in the country. Successful candidates will engage in a number of research projects that are aligned with data related to women’s health.

The scholarship is valued at R401 000 and will cover student for 2 years.

The scholarship will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, a laptop, a monthly stipend for accommodation and living expenses and reasonable support (upon motivation) to engage in/ present your work at a relevant national conference within your second year.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAMRC SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying for this bursary (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident in South Africa
  • You must be female
  • You must have completed an Honours degree
  • You must intend on studying full-time towards a Masters Degree in Biostatistics/ Statistics
  • You must intend on studying at a recognised and accredited University in South Africa
  • You must meet the admission requirements of the MSc study programme or you must have been offered a place at a South African University before applying to this award
  • You must demonstrate a strong background in Mathematics, Statistics, Demography, and any other quantitative fields
  • You must agree to SAMRC’s scholarship terms and conditions (listed on the bursary application form)
  • You must not be engaging in any other scholarship/ bursary/ grant/ remuneration (in cases where receiving such financial support binds you to enter service at another organization without prior consent from SAMRC)
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have been offered a place at a South African University for Masters of Science studies

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SAMRC SCHOLARSHIP

Students who meet all of the above criteria, must follow these steps to apply:
Step 1: Complete the MSc Online Application Form

Step 2: Download and complete the SAMRC Scholarship Application Form (.docx)
Enter “www.zabursaries.co.za” in the field asking how you heard about the SAMRC Scholarship.

Step 3: Collect clear copies of the following supporting documentation (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID document/ permanent residence (certified copy)
  • Honours degree certificate (certified copy)
  • Full academic record (certified copy)
  • Complete list of your current qualifications, research projects, and any other achievements
  • Proof of acceptance to study towards an MSc Biostatistics/ Statistics studies at a South African University
  • Support letter from a Master’s in Biostatistics/ Statistics coordinator/ research supervisor
  • Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae detailing relevant experience and research (if applicable)
  • Motivational letter stating why you deserve the award and how the award will impact your career, contributing to women’s health (1 page)

Step 4: Email your completed application form and supporting documents in a single PDF file to: RCDscholarships@mrc.ac.za
