ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA (UP)

The University of Pretoria (UP) is one of the leading research-intensive institutions within the country and continent. This institution has gained global recognition for a number of reasons, namely: relevance, impact, quality, developing people, making a difference, and creating knowledge.
To maintain its status of being a leading institution, the UP upheld its vision by introducing the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship. The Centre is aimed at contributing to the growth of various research activities across a number of disciplines.

The Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship was created in 2013, with the aim of equipping young students with the knowledge required to progress within the community and society. The Centre provides students with a schooling environment that promotes ideas across various disciplinary boundaries, allows for the debating of new ideas, facilitates interaction between senior scholars, and acts as an intellectual home for senior scholars, post-Doctoral fellowship, and postgraduate students.
The work done at the Centre is performed in a setting where the outcome is be used to address vital social issues within a multidisciplinary perspective, with key focus on Humanities and Social Sciences.
 

ABOUT THE UP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The University of Pretoria is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme for the 2024 academic year.

The UP Environmental Humanities Scholarship hopes to equip a gifted candidate with the means to complete their Doctoral qualification in Environmental Humanities, focusing on Environmental Sociology. The candidate will be affiliated with the project: Poetics and Politics of Extraction within the Environmental Humanities Programme.

The scholarship opportunity was made possible by the University of Pretoria’s Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship (CAS), a multi-disciplinary research entity aimed at hosting projects that promote multi/ trans-disciplinary topics relating to social, environmental, and economic factors.

The successful recipient will be inducted into a Doctoral programme at the Faculty of Humanities: Department of Sociology, and will be provided with supervision by the Department of Sociology and CAS staff.

The scholarship is valued at R150 000 per year, with renewal of the award based on the candidate’s performance. It’s also important to note that Doctoral fellowships are awarded tax free through the University of Pretoria.

The scholarship programme is intended to commence in January 2024, will run for a duration of three years, and will include exclusive research duties.

This project is supported by the hypothesis that the degradation, conservation, and sustainability of the environment are caused and dependent by the actions of humans. It hones in on the importance of disciplines relating to Humanities and making scholarly interventions by means of research to combat Anthropocene.

The candidate will be required to create a scholarly enquiry and find a means to establish relations of power between science, state, ecologies, and people regarding problems related to extraction and the environment.

The candidate will need to choose any topic that will relate to the following areas of resource extraction:

  • People and Parks
  • People and Fisheries
  • People and Mining
  • People and Water

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UP SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must have completed a Masters Degree in any of the following: Climate Justice, Economic History, Environmental Management and Policy, Environmental Sociology, Environmental Studies, History Political Geography, Hydropolitics, Natural Resources Governance, Political Ecology or a related field of study
  • You must register with the University of Pretoria
  • You must meet the UP’s Department of Sociology’s requirements for registration
  • You must be proficient with Zoom, Google Drive, and Dropbox
  • You must be able to work well in an interdisciplinary research team
  • You must be proficient in English
  • You must have excellent verbal and communication skills
