Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 28 days after the bursary closing date – if you do not receive any feedback by this time, please regard your application as unsuccessful.

The final selection of candidates will depend on their Matric final results.

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE ESKOM BURSARY?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Engineering Bursary: Degree studies (BEng / BSc):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric in 2025
  • Current Matric students:
    • you must have achieved a minimum of level 4 for English in Matric
    • you must have achieved a minimum of level 5 for Pure Mathematics in Matric
    • you must have achieved a minimum of level 5 for Physical Science in Matric
    • you must be entering your 1st year of undergraduate BEng/BSc degree studies, within one of the fields of study listed above, in 2027
    • you must have conditional acceptance to study at a public university in South Africa (if available)
  • Current University students:
    • you must be studying towards an undergraduate BEng/BSc degree, within one of the fields of study listed above
    • you must be a 1st or 2nd year student
    • you must have achieved a minimum overall aggregate of 60%
    • you must be enrolled and studying at a recognised public university in South Africa
  • You must NOT be in receipt of any other bursary funding
  • Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply

Engineering Bursary: Diploma studies:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric in 2025
  • Current Matric students:
    • you must have achieved a minimum of level 4 for English in Matric

    • you must be a 1st or 2nd year student
    • you must have achieved a minimum overall aggregate of 50%
    • you must be enrolled and studying at a recognised University of Technology in South Africa
  • You must NOT be in receipt of any other bursary funding
  • Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply

Non-Technical Bursary: Degree studies:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric in 2025
  • Current Matric students:
    • you must be entering your 1st year of undergraduate degree studies, within one of the fields of study listed above, in 2027
    • you must meet the minimum requirements for the study programme
    • you must have conditional acceptance to study at public university in South Africa
  • Current University students:
    • you must be studying towards an undergraduate degree, within one of the fields of study listed above
    • you must be a 1st or 2nd year student
    • you must have achieved a minimum overall aggregate of 60%
    • you must be enrolled and studying at a recognised public university in South Africa

WHAT DOES ESKOM DO?

Eskom is South Africa’s state-owned electricity utility and one of the country’s largest energy organisations. It was established in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM) to develop and coordinate the country’s electricity supply. The organisation later became known as Eskom.

Today, Eskom plays a central role in South Africa’s electricity system. Its operations cover the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, with a large fleet of power stations supplying electricity to the national grid. Its generation portfolio includes coal-fired power stations as well as the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in the Western Cape.

Eskom also operates and maintains much of South Africa’s high-voltage transmission network, moving electricity from power stations to distribution networks and large customers. Through its distribution operations, electricity is supplied to municipalities, businesses and households across the country.

The utility has undergone significant restructuring in recent years as part of efforts to improve operational performance, financial sustainability and reliability. Eskom’s former integrated structure has been separated into three operating entities: Eskom Holdings, Eskom Generation and Eskom Transmission, with the distribution function also being reorganised as part of the broader reform of the electricity sector.

Eskom remains a key institution in South Africa’s energy landscape, while the country continues to diversify its electricity supply through renewable energy, private generation and other energy-sector developments.
