ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – MWELASE
The Mwelase Group of Companies is a 100% black-owned South African company, founded in 2010. The companies focus is on the mining sector, specializing in opencast mining services, coal processing, logistics, and marketing.
The Mwelase Group of Companies operates, manages, and rehabilitates mining projects, including the Rietvlei Colliery.
ABOUT THE MWELASE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The Mwelase Group of Companies is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2026 academic year.
16 bursaries will be awarded for studies within the following preferred fields:
- Business Administration
- Engineering (Electrical / Mechanical)
- Financial Management or Accounting Sciences
- Human Resources Management
- Information Technology / Information Systems / Design
- Mining Engineering / Mining Survey / Geology / Metallurgy
- Operations Management
- Safety or Environmental Management

MORE ABOUT THE MWELASE BURSARY PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED, OTHER BENEFITS & SELECTION
The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, meals, accommodation and compulsory academic excursions or seminars (where applicable).
The bursary is renewable each year, based on satisfactory academic performance.
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted within 21 days after the closing date. If you do not receive any feedback by this time, please consider your application unsuccessful.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview before final selection is made.
Successful bursary recipients will be required to sign a bursary agreement with the Company.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MWELASE BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must have completed Matric
- You must be studying or intend on studying towards an undergraduate qualification, preferably within one of the fields listed above
- Students entering 1st year in 2026: you must have achieved a minimum result of 70% for Mathematics and Physical Science, if applying for Engineering studies
- Students entering 1st year in 2026: you must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Mathematics and Physical Science, if applying for Technical studies
- Students entering 1st year in 2026: you must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Mathematics and Accounting, if applying for Commerce studies
- Current tertiary students: you must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65%
- You must NOT be receiving any other bursary funding from another organisation or NSFAS
- Preference will be given to students residing in Emalahleni Municipality and Steve Tshwete Municipality, in Mpumalanga province
- Preference will be given to historically disadvantaged individuals

Note: there is no application form to be completed for this bursary application – students need only submit the list of documents below to apply.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your email application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Matric certificate (certified copy)
- Latest academic record/ transcripts, if currently studying
- Motivational letter requesting bursary funding (read our tips on how to write a motivational letter for your bursary application)
