ABOUT THE RUTA SECHABA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP – FIELDS COVERED

The Ruta Sechaba Foundation is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme, for the 2026 academic year.

The Foundation offers 2 types of scholarships, for High School studies:

  • Academic Scholarships: for students who are excellent achiever in academics.
  • Sports Scholarships: for students who are excellent achiever in sports.

Students will be placed at leading schools, in a supportive environment that enables them to maximise their potential and gain access to countless opportunities.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE RUTA SECHABA FOUNDATION BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be Black (African, Indian or Coloured), as defined by the B-BBEE Act
  • You must be currently in Grades 8 to 11
  • You must be an excellent achiever in academics or sport
  • You must be highly motivated
  • You must be determined to succeed
  • You must be in need of financial assistance, with a gross combined household income of NOT more than R45 000 per month
  • Academic Scholarship applicants: you must have achieved a minimum result of 65% for Mathematics, 65% for English and 65% overall average in your latest academic report
  • Sports Scholarship applicants: you must have been awarded national or provincial colours for one or more of the top 20 ranked sporting activities in the country and you must have consistently maintained a minimum academic average of 60%

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE RUTA SECHABA FOUNDATION BURSARY

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID document/ birth certificate (certified copy)
  • School reports for 2024 Term 4
  • School reports for 2025 Terms 1 and 2
  • Parents/ guardians ID documents (certified copies)
  • Parents/ guardians proof of household income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit and 3 months bank statement if unemployed/ proof of RSASSA grant if applicable)
  • Parents/ guardians proof of address
  • Motivational letter written by the applicant (1 page) (read our tips on how to write a motivational letter for your bursary application)
