ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – DHS
The Department of Human Settlements (DHS) is a sector of the South African government which is responsible for creating national housing policy, norms, and standards to facilitate sustainable, integrated human settlements. The DHS aims to provide access to services (water, sanitation, electricity), security of tenure, and economic opportunities. The department works with provinces and municipalities to deliver housing, upgrade informal settlements, support the gap market, and release public land for development, aiming for integrated communities where people can live, work, and play.
ABOUT THE DHS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The Department of Human Settlements is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme, for the 2026 academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded for studies within the following Human Settlements-related fields:
- Architecture / Architectural Technology
- Civil Engineering
- Construction Management / Construction Science
- Geographical Information Systems
- Quantity Survey / Land Survey / Building Survey
- Town and Regional Planning / Urban and Rural Studies

MORE ABOUT THE DHS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED & SELECTION
The scholarship will provide cover for the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, prescribed textbooks and course material, residence and meals.
The scholarship will NOT provide cover for the following expenses: stipend/ monthly allowance, transport costs, photocopying, bridging courses, membership affiliations and laundry services.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DHS SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must have completed Matric with exceptional matric results
- You must intend on studying towards an undergraduate qualification within one of the Human Settlements-related fields listed above
- You must be accepted or provisionally accepted to study at a recognised and accredited institution of higher learning in South Africa
- You must NOT have completed any previous tertiary qualifications
- You must be in financial need
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE DHS SCHOLARSHIP
Download and complete the DHS Scholarship Application Form 2026 (.pdf)
Enter “www.zabursaries.co.za” in the field asking how you heard about the DHS Scholarship.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your email application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document (certified copy)
- June/ December Matric results (certified copy)
- Proof of acceptance/ provisional acceptance from an accredited institution of higher learning
- Parents or guardians ID documents (certified copies)
- Parents or guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed/ proof of pension or sassa grant if applicable)
- Proof of Residence
