ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – NERSA

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is an independent public entity responsible for regulating the country’s electricity, gas, and petroleum pipeline industries. Established to ensure fair pricing, reliable supply, and sustainable energy development, NERSA plays a critical role in balancing the needs of consumers, industry, and the broader economy.

Through transparent regulation and oversight, the regulator supports South Africa’s transition toward a secure and efficient energy future—while developing scarce skills and future professionals through initiatives such as bursary and training programmes.
 

ABOUT THE NERSA BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

NERSA is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2026 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded for Masters and PhD degree studies, in fields that are in line with NERSA’s regulatory mandate, which includes the regulation of the electricity, piped-gas and petroleum pipelines industries.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NERSA BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying for the bursary (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must intend on studying towards a Masters or PhD Degree within one of the fields above, in 2026
  • You must have been accepted to study at a University or University of Technology in South Africa
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must demonstrate potential for academic success
  • You must be from a previously disadvantaged background
  • You must be in financial need
  • You must NOT be in receipt of any other bursary funding
  • You must be interested in following a career in the energy sector

Note: there is no application form to be completed for this bursary application – students need only submit the list of documents below to apply.
 

Submit clear copies of the following documentation along with your email application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Full tertiary academic record of highest qualification completed (certified copy)
  • University or University of Technology acceptance letter (on institutions letterhead)
  • Dissertation topic and an abstract
  • Motivational letter explaining why you should be awarded a bursary (approximately 500 words) (read our tips on how to write a motivational letter for your bursary application)
  • Parents or guardians ID documents (certified copies)
  • Parents or guardians household proof of income (latest payslips if employed, affidavit if unemployed, proof of grant or pension if applicable)
