WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE DLRRD BURSARY COVER?
The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development (DLRRD) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2027 academic year.
Bursaries will be awarded for studies within the Geomatics and Town/ Urban and Regional Planning fields, including the following:
Undergraduate studies:
- Geo-informatics / Geographic Information Science (Bachelors degree / BSc)
- Geomatics / Surveying / GIS (Diploma)
- Land Surveying / Geomatics (BSc)
- Town / Urban and Regional Planning (Bachelors degree / BSc / Diploma)
Postgraduate studies:
- Geomatics / Planning: Postgraduate studies (Advanced Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Honours, Masters and PhD)

WHAT EXPENSES DOES THE DLRRD BURSARY COVER?
The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition, accommodation, books, meals, and living allowance.

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE DLRRD BURSARY?
Successful candidates will be contacted within 14 days after the release of the Matric results. If you do not received any feedback by this time, please consider your application unsuccessful.
WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE DLRRD BURSARY?
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying for the bursary (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be from a previously disadvantaged background or rural community
- You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
- You must be studying or intend on studying full-time towards a qualification within one of the fields of study listed above
- You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited university in South Africa
- You must have achieved the following minimum results in Matric NSC finals:
- BSc students: a minimum of level 5 (60-69%) for Mathematics and Physical Science/ Geography
- Bachelors degree students: a minimum of level 4 (50-59%) for Mathematics and Physical
- Science
- Diploma students: a minimum of level 4 (50-59%) for Mathematics and Physical
- Science
- You must NOT be a staff member of the department
HOW CAN I APPLY FOR THE DLRRD BURSARY?
Applications must be submitted in either of the following ways (only apply via 1 method):

- Email application – download and complete the: DLRRD Bursary Application 2027 (.pdf)
- Applications must be submitted via email to: Externalbursaries@dlrrd.gov.za
- (Insert the words “DLRRD Bursary Application 2027” in the email subject line).

WHAT DOCUMENTS MUST I SUBMIT FOR THE DLRRD BURSARY?
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document (certified copy – not older than 3 months)
- Parents or guardians ID documents (certified copy)
- Grade 11 final results and Matric latest results, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
- Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
- Recent academic transcripts, if currently studying (certified copy)
- Proof of university registration/ acceptance
- Proof of address
Note: if you do not have your university acceptance letter or results yet, you may apply without these documents while you wait for them.
