ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SOUTHERN SPHERE PLATINUM

Southern Sphere Platinum is a mineral exploration and mine development company that holds prospecting rights for platinum group metals (PGMs) and chrome in the Steelpoort region of South Africa. The company is currently in the process of establishing an open-pit mining operation in the area. As part of its commitment to community upliftment and skills development, Southern Sphere supports initiatives that help build local talent for the future mining industry.

Through its bursary programme, Southern Sphere Platinum provides financial support to deserving South African students from communities within the Sekhukhune District. The bursary aims to assist academically strong students who wish to pursue studies aligned with the mining sector. By investing in education, the programme seeks to help students complete their qualifications while improving their future career prospects and employability within the mining and related industries.
 

ABOUT THE SOUTHERN SPHERE PLATINUM BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Southern Sphere Platinum is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2026 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded to students residing in the Sekhukhune District area (Limpopo), for studies within the following fields:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Data Science
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Environmental Science / Environmental Management / Ecology / Conservation Biology
  • Geology
  • Information Technology / Computer Science
  • Legal
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Process Engineering

MORE ABOUT THE SOUTHERN SPHERE PLATINUM BURSARY PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED & SELECTION

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses (up to a maximum amount of R200 000 per student): tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, accommodation (in university residence or approved accommodation), and a meal allowance.

The bursary will NOT cover any outstanding fees from previous years of study.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 21 days after the closing date. If you do not receive any feedback by this date, please consider your application unsuccessful.

Shortlisted applicants may be contacted for further assessments, including psychometric tests and/or interviews as part of the selection process. Shortlisted applicants will receive further terms and conditions of the bursary.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SOUTHERN SPHERE PLATINUM BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must reside within the local communities in the Sekhukhune District, in Limpopo province
  • You must be studying towards a qualification within one of the fields of study listed above
  • You must be enrolled for your 2nd year of study in 2026
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 60% across all your 1st year subjects
  • You must be studying at one of the following universities in South Africa: University of Limpopo, North-West University, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria
  • You must NOT be receiving any other bursary awards
  • Preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need

Note: there is no application form to be completed for this bursary application – students need only submit the list of documents below to apply.
 

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application email (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • Cover note/ motivational letter stating why you should be considered for the bursary
  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate
  • Full academic record of 1st year of studies
  • Proof of university acceptance or registration
  • Proof of reside in Sekhukhune District
