WHAT DOES THE NATIONAL TREASURY DO?
The National Treasury is the South African government department responsible for managing the country’s public finances and promoting sustainable economic growth. Established in terms of the Constitution and guided by the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), the department develops fiscal policy, prepares the national budget, oversees government expenditure, and works to ensure that public funds are managed transparently and efficiently. It also coordinates financial relations between national, provincial, and local government, helping to allocate resources where they are needed most.
In addition to managing the country’s finances, the National Treasury plays a central role in strengthening public procurement, improving financial governance, supporting infrastructure investment, and creating an environment that encourages economic development and job creation. Through its policies, budget planning, research, and oversight, the department aims to maintain stable public finances while supporting better service delivery and improving the quality of life for all South Africans.
